Coach Spotlight: Marie H.
How long have you been an owner of Curves?
I’ve co-owned the Curves in Mooresville, NC for 3 years now with my amazing business partner, Brenda. I was a Curves member in high school with my mom before I went off to college. I ended up becoming group fitness certified. It had always been a dream of mine to own my own fitness center and when I had the opportunity to purchase the club with Brenda it was like a dream come true.
What made you interested in owning a Curves?
I’ve always loved exercising. I can remember begging my parents to let me do gymnastics while the rest of my siblings had to take piano lessons. I’ve also always considered myself very entrepreneurial and have always wanted to own a fitness center. I was teaching Curves Circuit with Zumba at the club when Brenda first approached me about buying the club from the previous owner. I thought about it for a few months and decided to go for it!
What is your favorite part about owning your club?
Our members without a doubt. They are inspiring, they are encouraging, loving, hardworking, caring, and compassionate. I absolutely love working with them. It’s a special bond and a group of ladies – some of them have been here 16 years! It is such an honor to be able to serve them and help them reach their goals and help them achieve what they came in there for. I don’t know where I would be without these ladies. They give me a reason to get up and go to work every day. They have helped me through a lot and they bring me joy. They lift me up as much as I try to lift them up.
What is your favorite machine and why?
I love the Ab/Back machine! It works the abdominals and works the core. Everyone wants a strong core, good balance, and nice abs.
What is something you’re most proud of from your members?
Their heart. They always come to work hard for whatever their x-factor is. Whether it be their grandkids, or their ability to travel – whatever it may be, whatever their passion is that drives them in there. What makes them come to our events, or tell a friend that “I go to Curves and now I can do whatever”. It really inspires me and I’m so proud to see them always working so hard.
How do you keep the circuit fresh?
We almost always have monthly challenges. We like to hold fun events and I always play fresh songs for the classes. We love to laugh on and off the circuit. I want people to enjoy what they’re doing and want them to come back. I know if people enjoy what they’re doing and are having fun, they’ll want to come back. Having fun, not taking it so seriously, but having fun. Be serious about goals and what we’re doing, but still have fun!
What is one piece of advice you could give to women trying to build muscle or lose weight?
Persistence and consistency is the key. You just have to do it and keep doing it. No matter how many times you get knocked down, no matter how many challenges get in your way, or how many times those negative voices tell you to stop. Keep doing it, keep going, keep pushing. Even if you’ve fallen off for a while, keep going. Even if you work hard to reach your goal, you still have to maintain where you’ve gotten. You get what you want, once you’ve gotten to where you wanted to be.
